FILM "HOPE, SIERRA DE TERUEL"

#Tribute to André Malraux #The story of a copy

Thursday, October 22 · 2 PM
2 PM · Presentation by Édouard Waintrop

"The story of the two versions of Hope, the film, struck me in 1996 when the newspaper Libération sent me to Madrid to investigate the sixtieth anniversary of the Spanish Civil War. As I was a film critic, it was in this field that I conducted my research.

The Filmoteca española allowed me to see all the films produced during the Civil War for which it had copies. From anarchist fictions to Francoist newsreels. I discovered them, alongside Ferran Alberich, filmmaker and film history researcher. Ferran had just been tasked by the Filmoteca to find a copy of André Malraux's mythical film.

3 PM · Screening
Hope, Sierra de Teruel
ANDRÉ MALRAUX | France, 1938, 1h30 | DCP

Cast: Andres Mejuto, Nicolas Rodriguez, José Maria Lado…

André Malraux was always convinced of the importance of cinema. Fully invested in the fight of the Spanish republicans against the fascist rebels, he first wrote a novel in honor of the "red" fighters published in 1937. He then naturally added a film, shot in 1938. This film took episodes from the book and others. Sierra de Teruel (its original title) was financed by the Subsecrataria de la propaganda, thus by the Spanish state. This moment of exaltation of the anti-fascist struggle only ended after the defeat of the Republic.
