Somewhere in Nevada, under a blazing light, the last cowboys of an American dream that has already slipped away stir. They are the misfits, those "dysfunctional" ones according to the French title, who populate this film that brought together several great names of Hollywood cinema: Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, and of course Marilyn Monroe in her final role before the end…

There hangs over this film, scripted by Arthur Miller who was in the midst of divorcing his wife to whom the role had been entrusted, an air of apocalypse. The grand cavalcades of the West are transformed into hunting expeditions aimed at capturing the last wild mustangs to turn them into dog food… what is left to hope for then? Marilyn's last film, certainly, but perhaps also the last film of a certain innocence of American cinema.
