In 1910, when cinema was still in its infancy, lawyer Leo Harrigan finds himself unwittingly immersed in the world of the pioneers of the seventh art. Accompanied by cowboy Buck Greenway, he discovers improvised shoots, shady producers, and the first stars, before revealing himself as a director.

Amidst chases, slapstick gags, and love stories, Peter Bogdanovich nostalgically and humorously pays tribute to the heroic age of silent cinema. Inspired by tales recounted to the director by pioneers Allan Dwan and Raoul Walsh, Nickelodeon reconstructs an era when the language of cinema was being invented on the fly.
