Devdas, the son of a wealthy landowner, and Paro, the daughter of a modest neighbor, are passionately in love. Unfortunately, Devdas's father does not accept Parvati into his family due to social class differences. Paro is then forced to marry an older landowner, and Devdas, who goes to Calcutta, falls into alcoholism.

This romantic drama, compared to Romeo and Juliet, is the first film from popular Indian cinema to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, marking the beginning of "Bollywood mania" in France!
