Adapted from a crime novel by W.R. Burnett, The Asphalt Jungle continues to pave the way for the film noir genre that Huston had initiated ten years earlier with The Maltese Falcon, featuring Humphrey Bogart as detective Marlowe. This time, the "private eye" gives way to a big-hearted "hooligan" portrayed by a masterful Sterling Hayden, still early in his career. A classic tale of redemption in an urban landscape corrupted by crime and money, The Asphalt Jungle also marks the beginning of a sub-genre of film noir: the "heist film," which continues to captivate audiences today, from the Ocean's Eleven franchise to the series La Casa de Papel. We also discover a young and radiant Marilyn Monroe in a supporting role that is nonetheless crucial to the film's relentless mechanics, a masterpiece to be (re)discovered.
