Comar: Natural Trait?

Musée Muséum DépartementalGap

About

A multifaceted artist, both a visual artist and a writer, Philippe Comar taught drawing and morphology at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris for nearly forty years. With his students, he explored museums and science institutions during outdoor drawing sessions. From these hours spent in renowned institutions like the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution to more intimate settings, he captured the diversity of natural history collections – from botanical samples to taxidermied specimens, including "living collections" – and the unique atmosphere of exhibition spaces and reserves. His work is rooted in the tradition of observational drawing, while transcending it, as drawing, much like taxidermy, is more an act of creation than a mere replication.

The exhibition Natural Trait? engages in a dialogue between Comar's art and natural sciences, resonating with a second exhibition titled Sauvage, which will open in the fall of 2026. Together, they question how we observe, classify, and understand the living.
