Comar, Natural Trait?

Musée Muséum DépartementalGap

About

An artist with multiple facets, both a visual artist and a writer, Philippe Comar taught drawing and morphology at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris for nearly forty years. For himself or with his students from the Beaux-arts, Comar enjoys drawing outside the walls in various and eclectic places such as science museums and natural history museums. From the hours spent in famous institutions like the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution or the more confidential reserves of medical museums, he captures the diversity of natural history collections - from botanical samples to taxidermied specimens, including "living collections" - and the unique atmosphere of exhibition spaces and reserves. His work is rooted in the tradition of observational drawing, while surpassing it, since, like taxidermy practice, drawing is much more an act of creation than a mere copy in every respect.
The exhibition Natural Trait? brings together Comar's art and natural sciences.
Together, they question the way we observe, classify, and understand the living.
