Exhibition: A Glimpse into the World of Mauzan

Gap

About

Lucien Achille Mauzan, born in Gap in 1883, is an artist well-known for his poster work across Europe and Latin America. Through numerous collaborations with merchants from his home region, he also shaped the high-Alpine regional imagination by bringing to life, on labels, posters, and brochures, characters that are much more than mere stereotypes of Alpine folklore.

A companion of the Departmental Museum, he contributed his first work as early as 1911 and initiated the Mauzan fund. Over the years, the collection has grown with contributions from the artist and, after his death in 1952, from his family, who are fully committed to promoting his work.

In 2026, thanks to the generous donation from his heirs of nearly two hundred works and archives, complemented by a donation from the Friends of the Museum Association and purchases from the Department, one of the main collections of the establishment is enriched.
The exhibition reveals engravings, postcards, and unpublished drawings alongside works from the old collection. It unveils the behind-the-scenes of artistic production: medals from the School of Fine Arts, agendas and notebooks, sketches and zinc plates... which are all keys to understanding Mauzan's vibrant creative universe.

Two series of works will be shown successively over the eleven months of the exhibition to ensure their preventive conservation.
