FROM 14 FEBRUARY TO 20 DECEMBER
Estrine Museum Exhibition: Marine Wallon, That Place
About
Add anto.info to your preferred sourcesMarine Wallon paints landscapes of painting. Since the beginning of her work on canvas in 2013, she has sown doubt about her connection to the tradition of landscape, questioning the place itself, that of individual and collective memory. To do this, she creates screenshots of forgotten documentary archives and uses notes captured on site. Her canvases reveal spaces of wandering, strolling, and crossing.
Has she seen these seascapes or mountains, these deserted beaches, these steep cliffs, these turbulent rivers, these misty distances, these arid deserts? Has she encountered these lost skiers, these wandering walkers, these mysterious boats? Only the titles, toponyms with a unique sound, provide some geographical hints.
Her multiple viewpoints seem to construct an infinite and almost labyrinthine spatiality, in which the viewer can get lost, stop, and look towards the hinterland, a notion dear to Yves Bonnefoy.
The figure, whether human or animal, often diminutive, is reduced to an anonymous presence immersed in vast, vibrant color spaces that oscillate between abstraction and figuration.
Through a simplification of details and the exaggeration of the size of her brushes, Marine Wallon provokes a vibration of the painted surface, also accentuated by an intense chromatic play. Material effects clash on her canvases, whether very small or monumental. Some areas are smooth and painted flat; others are treated with thick strokes suggesting various tools — brushes, scrapers, spatulas, rags, glass wool… — capable of evoking the materiality of a ground, a rock, or a wave.
Recently, Marine Wallon has returned to her first medium: paper. She juxtaposes acrylic washes, oil pastels, and pencil, taking advantage of the lightness of the sheet to capture the fleetingness of her impressions.
Her printmaking work is also beginning to expand. From her engraved copper plate, Isola, commissioned by the Chalcographie du Louvre and printed in intaglio, she continues to explore new techniques.
