Exhibition: "David Hockney, the World is Beautiful"

"What interests me is looking, thinking simply. And when you do that, you touch people. Everyone looks, but it remains to be seen to what degree of intensity one is willing to do so."

Freddie Mercury and Elton John are among the millions touched by the work of David Hockney. In the exhibition Freddie Mercury, Never Say Goodbye, a portrait of the painter is featured.
When I learned of his passing on June 11, my desire to pay tribute to him became clear. Here are sixteen photographs accompanied by his words.
David Hockney is first and foremost a style. An unforgettable accent. Bleached hair. Bursts of laughter. A cigarette. And dachshunds.
Then comes the essence: a generous work, delivered to movements, to colors.

The Hockney blue. Joy. Beauty.

David Hockney seeks sincerity in the countryside, in every hill, every flower, every tree. Every story.
Nature serves as nourishment for his intentions: "A painting is something made with paint. Something that depicts something. It’s an attempt. It’s not always reality, but reality is complex… You have to look! You can’t go jogging at the same time. If you truly look, the world is beautiful."
Learning to open one’s eyes. Illuminating the teaching of the gaze: "It’s a global problem, people are blind."

In the 2000s, he shook up the art world by making his iPad the main tool for his new paintings: "My father taught me not to worry too much about what others say. It’s not a working-class attitude, it’s rather aristocratic."

His work will always illuminate the stories of nature. Those of men: "When you are faced with the Grand Canyon, the sensation of space creates a certain tension. It comes from the fact that you have before you a space that is both finite and infinite. I sat there and contemplated this abyss. As my gaze wandered, I felt that everyone is inevitably confronted with this question: what is space? A friend examined my painting of the Grand Canyon and whispered: 'This must be the path to paradise.' That’s very nice. As for my sister, she thinks that space is God. I like that."

From the sky, the world must be even more beautiful, David.
