In the history of painting, color holds a prominent place. Initially imitative of reality, it later frees itself, much like the work of artist Vincent Van Gogh, who paves the way for a new, more subjective and sensitive use of color.

In the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century, color continues to be the main subject of artistic experimentation: Albert Gleizes combines it in flat areas with the decomposition of perspective; Robert and Sonia Delaunay, who theorized orphism, see in the decomposition of forms the emergence of light and thus colors. Piet Mondrian, a leader in abstract art, theorizes a new way of composing his works based on straight lines (vertical or horizontal) and primary colors that play a decisive role in the creation of compositions.

His work will influence many painters such as Geneviève Asse or Geneviève Claisse. A few years later, artists from the School of Paris, including André Marchand and Édouard Pignon, will take a different direction, using saturated color palettes in figurative compositions.

In the turning point of the second half of the 20th century, Léon Zack, like many others, renounces past traditions, and his research leads him to seek the hidden truth beyond color. Mario Prassinos seeks in "non-colors" (white and black) through drawings to get closer to the light that emanates from them. Within the "Support Surface" movement, Vincent Bioulès shifts to abstraction and attempts to restore to color its independent reality. Meanwhile, the materiality of color takes on its emotional dimension in the work of Giancarlo Bargoni, where the visible brushstroke brings a contrasting chromatic palette to life. Gérard Fromanger, for his part, reinvents color by revisiting processes such as photography and printing through the isolation of four fundamental colors: blue, red, black, and yellow. Finally, in Denis Laget's work, color emerges from a thick muddy material in all its tonal power.

Through a chronological display, the Estrine Museum offers a chance to discover all the artistic explorations related to color and its material.
