This maquis, created in Toulouse in 1942, made up of high school and university students, was transferred in 1943 to Hérault, in Douch (near Lamalou-les-Bains), where on September 10 one of the very first battles between a maquis and the German army took place. This school-maquis grew in numbers and expanded into the Cévennes of Gard and Lozère, then towards Clermont. On August 26, 1944, the Bir Hakeim maquis participated in the liberation of Montpellier.
Jacques Balaguer, Georges Couci, Marc Fiol, Georges Rouan, and Alain Uziel, sons of maquis members, will come to testify and discuss this emblematic group of resistors, in the presence of Jacques-Henri Coste, Honorary Lecturer at the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3.
