Music by Uzong Choe (born in 1968). Libretto by Sam-Shik Pai based on his play Hwajeonga.

Presented as a French premiere, Hwajeonga is an exceptional artistic event, the result of a co-production with the National Opera of Korea. This work, where intimate dialogue meets grand history, resonates with female voices within a narrative often written in the masculine.

The story takes place in the spring of 1950, on the eve of the Korean War. To celebrate Madame Kim's sixtieth birthday, nine women gather for a hwajeon-nori, a floral picnic during which they prepare hwajeon – delicate rice cakes adorned with flower petals (Hwajeonga literally means "Song of the Flower Cakes"). This suspended moment becomes a symbol of a fragile community, on the brink of being upheaved by History. Blending theater and musical lyricism, Hwajeonga unfolds a refined aesthetic inspired by Korean traditions, delicately exploring familial ties, memory, and the transmission between generations.
