Introduction to Archaeology
6:30 PM
Inauguration of the showcase presenting the permanent exhibition of part of the archaeological collection of the Tours de Castillon
The study of ancient societies is often overlooked yet very present in our society. This conference offers a general approach to Archaeology, both in its methodology and its functioning on a national scale in France. This multidisciplinary field is rich in issues, techniques, and opportunities to understand our past. The discovery of this world and its subtleties will be presented to you through six themes. We will start with a general presentation to define this discipline, its history, and revisit its stereotypes. We will then discuss Archaeology in France: its organization, legislation, and its place in society. We will address methodology: from the field to publication regarding the operational chain in the study of a site. We will continue with Laboratory Archaeology by providing an overview of specialized studies. We will explore the concepts of relative and absolute chronologies, as well as dating techniques and their stakes. Finally, we will conclude with the study of our past through Archaeology by sweeping through different eras via the types of remains encountered.
This conference will be followed by the inauguration of the permanent exhibition of part of the archaeological collection of the Tours de Castillon in the showcase of the multipurpose hall of Paradou.
