Plants on the Way to Mars
About
Add anto.info to your preferred sourcesHow to supply a Martian base with fruits and vegetables? On the occasion of the 2026 Science Festival in Cordes-sur-Ciel, the Société Nouvelle d’Astronomie offers a day of discoveries around the exploration of Mars, space biology, and photonic propulsion.
Imagine a future base established on Mars. The journeys between Earth and the red planet are long, and fresh products cannot be preserved indefinitely. One solution: transport live plants into space, aboard specially designed capsules to ensure their survival during the journey.
Around this scenario blending real science and embraced fiction, the public will discover the constraints of space travel, the cultivation of plants in microgravity, journeys to Mars, solar sails, and photonic propulsion.
Under the tent and throughout the day: models, plants, experiments, telescope, projections, mini-conferences, and exchanges with scientific speakers, some of whom will participate remotely.
Science will also meet culture and gastronomy. From the clove tree of La Réunion to the square peas of Tarn, visitors will discover the links between plants, territories, and culinary traditions. A wood-fired cooking demonstration will accompany the day.
And because science can also surprise, a scientific magic show will provide a playful approach to topics as astonishing as nuclear fusion in stars or string theory.
