With Des danses et des luttes, Bouziane Bouteldja continues his research on dance and its central role in our societies. Following his conference Dance & Thoughts (2018), he explores the history of dances born from social, political, or identity struggles. Through narrative, transmission, and movement, he highlights how bodies carry collective memories, resistances, and aspirations for emancipation, inviting everyone to reflect on living together through dance.

Following residencies in several countries, Des danses et des luttes tells the story of dances born from social struggles or liberation movements, as well as the displacements and encounters between peoples.

Whether it’s pantsula, which emerged in the townships of black communities in South Africa under apartheid in resistance to racial segregation, or voguing, which originated from LGBTQIA+ Afro-American and Latino communities in the United States fighting against discrimination, these dances allow us to revisit major political and societal crises while experiencing, through the body, the struggles that gave rise to them.

Surrounded by a team of professional dancers and a group of amateurs, Bouziane Bouteldja takes on the role of storyteller, sharing with the audience historical and geopolitical references, as well as anecdotes that illuminate the connections between dance, society, and history.
