EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAY - ARCHIVES OF MONTPELLIER

MONTPELLIER

About

The archives unveil themselves for Heritage Days!

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Archives of Montpellier will open their doors to the public on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10 AM to 6 PM. An invitation to discover, for free, the behind-the-scenes of a usually discreet place.

Free and open to all, the event will highlight the two themes of this edition: Heritage at Risk and the Heritage of Photography.

Throughout the day, there will be self-guided visits in the reading room to discover the document restoration work and guided tours of the conservation storage areas, usually closed to the public, to explore the behind-the-scenes of document preservation. A highlight of the day: an exceptional presentation of the manuscript Le Petit Thalamus dating from the 13th century, an emblematic piece of Montpellier's heritage.

This day will be an opportunity for the Archives team to raise public awareness about the challenges of preserving these fragile documents. Restoring, preserving, but also reinventing uses: these are all challenges to keep this heritage alive, threatened by time.
A wonderful encounter to dive into the heart of Montpellier's memory and rediscover the past from a lively and accessible perspective.

Free access from 10 AM to 6 PM, guided tours by reservation here: https://www.billetweb.fr/visite-des-archives-de-montpellier
