Maxime and Stéphane are friends working together in the intimate atmosphere of a violin-making workshop. Maxime, a violin dealer, is a successful, active man without particular emotional turmoil. Stéphane, the luthier, lives in seclusion, in a winter of the heart whose reasons are hard to discern. Maxime falls in love with a young violinist, Camille Kessler. A complex relationship develops between the three characters.
A Heart in Winter is Claude Sautet's penultimate film and his most musical one. This is true both for the original score, which consists solely of Ravel's chamber music, and for the plot itself. A Heart in Winter tells us about life: the evolution and complexity of the feelings of three characters. A love triangle musically evoked by the three instruments of Ravel's trio that open and rhythm the film: a violin, a cello, and a piano. Great cinema.
