A central figure in international artistic circles, Francis Picabia (1879-1953) plays a key role in the history of the early 20th-century avant-gardes. In the 1910s and 1920s, fueled by his travels between New York and Barcelona, the artist develops an artistic language that is as bold as it is irreverent. The exhibition at the modern art museum of Céret will trace the artist's journey from a new perspective, particularly exploring the role played by Iberian culture in his work and that of his contemporaries. The exhibition will bring together nearly a hundred works by Picabia and his New York and Catalan artistic circle, from Marcel and Suzanne Duchamp to Albert Gleizes and Juliette Roche, from Robert and Sonia Delaunay to Kees van Dongen, Marie Laurencin, Natalia Gontcharova, and even Pablo Picasso. The exhibition will benefit from the support of prestigious institutions in France and Spain, through exceptional loans from the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Centre Pompidou, the Palais Princier de Monaco, the Centro de Arte – Museo Reina Sofía, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, as well as the Picasso museums in Paris and Barcelona.
