About

Edouard Manet the iconoclastic dandy
Born in 1832 into a wealthy family, he has a taste for beauty and perfection. Destined by his father to become a lawyer, he rebels and asserts his calling as a painter. Trained in classicism and studio work, he quickly breaks free with provocative subjects where women are nude and proud to be so; his first two paintings exhibited in the Salons in Paris, "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe" and "Olympia," will make him a notorious and unclassifiable painter, yet well-known.

Thanks to Baudelaire and Zola, he draws closer to the first Impressionists. His palette brightens through his interactions with Renoir, Monet, and Berthe Morisot, who will become one of his favored models and for whom he will harbor a secret passion.
