Eastern Music and Makam Workshop

Description:
Theory of Turkish makam, studies of scholarly and popular pieces, measured and unmeasured improvisations (taskim). The workshop is open to both tempered and non-tempered instruments, as well as singers.
Program:
The workshop is primarily aimed at experienced musicians wishing to discover or deepen their practice of modal music, or at musicians already practicing this music. We will work on popular and scholarly pieces, analyzing them to understand their functioning (Makam and modulation). We will focus on style (ornaments, feeling of rhythm). And we will delve into the question: How to improvise in modal music?

Required Level: Intermediate to advanced. Ability to learn a melody by ear.
Location: DARD’ART, 1401 Rue Fontcouverte 34070 Montpellier, – Tramway Yves du Manoir.
Fees: From €175 to €205 for the pass, from €75 to €95 for the weekend.

Biography

Théophile JOUBERT is a multi-instrumentalist. He plays the cello, banjo, oud, saz, and kopuz. He trained in Occitan traditional music and microtonality through the CAMINAIRES #1 program, and in Mediterranean and Eastern music with the Labyrinth Musical Workshop (Sokratis Sinopoulos, Ross Daly, Kelly Thomas, the Papaioannou brothers, Efren Lopez, and Derya Türkan, Avgerini Gatsi, Mayu Shviro). In 2025, he received the FAMDT companionship grant with cellist Mayu Shviro, studying Ottoman music and Azerbaijani mugham with her. He has also been through: Le CIMM (medieval music), Paul Valéry University (Bachelor's in Musicology), the CRR of Montpellier (Oud, choir, composition)… Today he performs in TARAKNA, Koskina Trio, Krinkrin, Edra… and leads the amateur ensemble Cirusk.
