ASAME CONFERENCE - SEPTEMBER

DAY OF SEPTEMBER 21 organized by ASAME with the support of Souvenir Français, the smugglers, and in partnership with the Banyuls Town Hall and the Port of Banyuls.
The day after the Heritage Days but within the theme of the Heritage Days.

PROGRAM for the day:

Afternoon: Strolling evocation of the maritime life of Banyuls Christine Salles (graduate of the University of Perpignan in art history, specializing in architectural history):
Departure from Rue Jean Bart: Fishermen's hamlet, Pirates and Privateers;
Villa Douzans: Trade and small cabotage;
Terrace of "21": The beach as a port;
Cannon: The sea watch service, the defensive system of the bay, the cannon fire of the farms' felucca;
Old prud’homie, the administration of seafarers;
The statue of the remandaïre, shipwrights, etc.;
Arrival at the port, the oceanological observatory and the Pinque of Claude Terrisse (3 masts with lateen sails).

In the evening at 9 PM: Port of Banyuls in front of the Captaincy lifting area.

Banyuls during the period of pirates and privateers
Arrival of the boat l’Ange Gardien on Sunday, September 20 in the late afternoon or Monday, September 21 in the morning. (Departure on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the weather)
Depending on the arrival time, l’Ange Gardien may be accompanied by some Banyuls boats and the smugglers.

The Boat:
L'Ange Gardien is a three-masted lateen sailboat, making it a rare sailing vessel!
The origin of its name can be traced back to the history of Agde. It is named after the ship of Claude Terrisse, the famous privateer from Agde who gave pirates and Spanish vessels a hard time in the early 17th century.
Although not a faithful reproduction, its traditional Mediterranean rigging and raised stern evoke the slender lines of pinques, the merchant ships that sailed the seas at that time, of which few details have survived to this day.

Claude Terrisse was born in Agde in 1598 into a family of wealthy merchants. Drawn to the sea, he took part at a young age in commercial expeditions and then took command of an armed ship, L’Ange Gardien, chartered by his brother-in-law Jacques du Puget, trading in the Mediterranean.
In 1632, he entered the service of Charles-Emmanuel of Savoy and then his son Victor-Amédée I as a privateer and obtained command of several ships to hunt down pirates plaguing the coasts of Sardinia.
In 1635, Louis XIII declared war on Spain. Cardinal Richelieu then urged Claude Terrisse to return to his homeland to serve the Kingdom of France and promoted him to captain. During this period, he frequently visited our shores between Collioure and Cadaqués, as Michel Rézé will explain with numerous archival documents.
In 1659, at the age of 61, he retired to his hometown, where he served several times as first consul.
At his death, he bequeathed his property in perpetuity to a Charity, a foundation intended to provide assistance to the poor of the city.

EVENING PROGRAM IN FRONT OF THE BOAT AT 9 PM:
The evening will be presented and hosted by Sylvain Athiel, President of the journalism school of Toulouse.

• Presentation of the context of life in Banyuls during this period;

• Presentation of the boat l’ANGE GARDIEN, a rare, if not unique, reconstruction of a 3-masted lateen sailboat;

• Conference by Michel Rezé with interaction from Christine Salles for anecdotes about Banyuls;

• Exchange with the public;

• Presentation of the diorama painting entrusted to ASAME by Soizic and Bernard Lime. This painting represents the "Xebec Dos Hermanas" of 100 tons registered in Palma de Mallorca, which sailed under the command of Don Ernesto Soler from 1868 to 1901, thanks to the donors;

• ASAME's membership in the Mediterranean Maritime Heritage Federation and presentation of the federation;

• Book signing by Michel Rezé;

• Refreshments and treats offered by ASAME

• Stand of the publisher Cap Béar Edition for presentation and sale of Michel Rézé's book, Banyuls boats, and Didier Fiorentiny, and setting up 3 presentation totems for the books on site during the conference.
