Four hundred years ago…
On August 31, 1622, the siege of the city began by Louis XIII and his troops.
This date marks a turning point in the history of the city. It is part of a long period of over two centuries of conflict between Catholics and Protestants. The citadel was born from this event and has since had a unique fate.
The proposed visit tells this story by giving you an exceptional opportunity to enter the citadel (now occupied by Lycée Joffre) and explore memorial sites on the Esplanade and in the Écusson. Come listen to the testimonies left by the men and women of that time and imagine Montpellier in a different light...
